Every week, we ask a different local artist to provide their unique perspective on the pandemic experience from a musician’s point of view. Through words, video and music, each musician will share their story, along with an audio or video sample of a recent project, and a link to purchase their music so that you can support their work.
This week, in our first couples contribution, Rebekah Wolkstein and Drew Jurecka of Payadora talk about recording remotely, working across disciplines and making music with the whole family.
"Since we cannot perform live, all of our work has become virtual. We were planning shows with our tango band Payadora in collaboration with incredible dancers from PointeTango; instead we created an hour long film called Tango in the Dark. (Watch a teaser here.) Before Covid, we were finishing a string quartet record with the Venuti String Quartet - which includes a new jazz fusion string quartet written by Drew; we had to record the last movement of the Ravel String Quartet remotely.
A highlight has been recording our own songs and arrangements with our family, featuring our young daughters singing in videos. In fact, we are writing a musical which includes the song from our latest family video, “Like My Sister,” written by me and arranged by Drew. We’ve started to collaborate more as a couple - we’ve learned some film editing skills, I've been songwriting and Drew has been honing his technical skills in live-streaming and assisting other musicians in recording remotely.
We’ve had more opportunities to perform as a duo, performing several livestreams through the year. We are really excited about the new musical we are writing and the film collaboration with PointeTango and Payadora. We are also currently recording albums for Yiddish Glory and will be recording our third Payadora album remotely this year; Drew performs a monthly livestream with Alex Pangman and Nathan Hiltz - you can see past shows and catch new editions at alexpangman.com/livestream."
