Every week, we ask a different local artist to provide their unique perspective on the pandemic experience from a musician’s point of view. Through words, video and music, each musician will share their story, along with an audio or video sample of a recent project, and a link to purchase their music so that you can support their work.
This week, Ernesto Cervini talks parenting, finding focus and staying creative.
"The toughest part was parenting through the pandemic. I'm very lucky that my wife is a teacher, so she did a great job of "mom school" which doubled as daddy's drum practice time. Obviously, the effect this has had on my performing career is pretty devastating (tons of cancelled gigs, and 2 cancelled tours) but I know there are tons of musicians that suffered the same fate, so I try and think of the positives...so much time to work on new stuff!
I've been trying to do my best to focus on what CAN be done during this time, and not focus on what I'm missing out on. I've also learned not to take for granted the incredible magic of playing music with other musicians in front of a live audience. What a gift!
"I've turned my drum practice focus to 2 different goals...I'm in the process of learning a whole book of incredible drum etudes by Charley Wilcoxon and posting them all on YouTube and I've been working on learning and recording a series of drum solo transcriptions. I have so many more on my to-do list!!! In addition, I recorded a series of 5 tunes with my JUNO Award-winning group, Turboprop, and I'm releasing them on Youtube over the next month or two. I released the first a couple of weeks ago. It's called the Queen, and it was written and arranged by Tara Davidson. These were made possible by the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts and their Digital Originals grant. Lastly, I've been composing a bunch of music for my next album, which will be based on the incredible Canadian crime novels by Louise Penny. I can't wait to get going on this one!"
