Artist Profile: A star among gypsies

Born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain to political exiles from Equatorial Guinea, singer Buika has seen it all. Growing up among gypsies, she learned Spanish and flamenco in equal measure. Barred from singing in church because her voice was too rough, she went from performing in night clubs to working as a Tina Turner impersonator to eventually achieving success on the world stage with her 2006 album, Mi Nina Lola. She wraps her husky, impassioned voice around everything from jazz standards to the repertoire of the Mexican singer Chavela Vargas. Wednesday, June 25 - Koerner Hall 8PM.
