Two students were selected by faculty members from each school to make up the eight-member ensemble. The 2018 JMI Ensemble is:

Rick Shadrach Lazar & Montuno Police

Six accomplished musicians playing original instrumental compositions, combining wicked grooves and creative interplay. We mix the harmonic and improvisational traditions of North American Jazz with the rhythmic influences of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Arabic music. The result is an aural explosion of global grooves taking the ear in new and riveting musical directions.

Formed in the nineties Montuno Police has released 4 CD’s. Bang, the Juno nominated Touch, The Call (live with guest Randy Brecker) and Nomads.

ACID JAZZ

Jazz Money x DillanPonders

So Long Seven

So Long Seven masterfully blends genres such as jazz, classical, world and folk to create richly textured acoustic music. So Long Seven consists of Neil Hendry (guitar/mandolin), William Lamoureux (violin/voice), Ravi Naimpally (tabla/percussion) and Tim Posgate (banjo), together they are creating a seamless tapestry of sound through their original music. Influenced by bands such as Punch Brothers, Shakti, Oregon and many others the band is breaking new ground.

Spectrum Music

Spectrum Music is a collective of new-generation Canadian composers and music curators who create and present genre-defying new music that fuses many genres (jazz and creative music, classical and contemporary music, world music, and pop/folk music). We do this through themed concerts, to explore points where art music collides with the real world. Rooted in jazz and creative music, the core of our philosophy has grown from the idea that the future of jazz music lies in its synthesis with other genres.
